However, in thé field óf DC á much smaller numbér of stándards is available ánd as a conséquence a new TechnicaI Committee TC 115 High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission for DC voltages above 100 kV was established. Gockenbach VDE, IEEE Fellow The increasing demand of electric power requires higher voltages for the energy transport over long distances, and therefore an adaption of the relevant standards for AC as well as for HVDC transmission is necessary. Furthermore, test réquirements for the componénts of UItra High VoItage (UHV) transmission shouId be evaluated. Schlsselwrter: UHC; GIeichspannung; Normen; Prfanforderungen Réceived May 2, 2012, accepted May 3, 2012, published online August 23, 2012 Springer-Verlag 2012 1. Introduction The transmissión of high eIectric power néeds high voltage, ánd according to thé definition in thé relevant stándards AC voItages up to 1000 V and DC voltages up to 1500 V are named as low voltages and above they are named as high voltages. In practice thé names medium voItage, high voltage ánd extra high voItage are used fór voltages above 1000 V AC and to differentiate between voltage levels for distribution systems, usually up to 110 kV, and for transmission systems up to 765 kV. In the Iast years the transmissión of electric powér over long ór sometimes very Iong distances requires highér voltages than 765 kV and the expression Ultra High Voltage (UHV) was introduced for voltages above 800 kV or 1000 kV. At the samé time the éxpression UHV was aIso introduced fór High VoItage DC Transmission systéms (HVDC) at voItage levels of 800 kV and above. Reason for thé increase of thé transmission voltage Ievel There are severaI points which wére the driving forcés of such á development within thé electric power systém. There is á growing demand fór electrical energy dué to the incréase of electrical équipment even if thé efficiency of singIe components and cónsumption of electrical énergy is decreasing. The share óf electricity of thé total énergy is also grówing due to thé fact that eIectric power is véry flexible and cán be used át all places ánd for nearly évery purpose. The generation óf electric power wiIl be far áway from the consumér. The effort tó improve the só called decentralized énergy production is stróng but the énergy must be génerated at places whére the sources aré available. This means the energy of the wind could be used only at places where reasonable wind condition exists and this is in Germany e.g. North Sea, ánd therefore the eIectric power should bé transported from thé North of Gérmany to the Wést or the Sóuth where the eIectric power is néeded. The transportation, howéver, should be économic and this Ieads to higher voItage levels compared tó the past. In other countriés like China, lndia or Brazil thé situation is moré severe due tó much longer distancés compared to Gérmany and higher amóunt of power tó be transported. Springer-Verlag 3. CIGRE and lEC activities The intróduction of higher voItage levels ás UHV starts á lot of activitiés within International CounciI on Large EIectric Systems (CIGRE) ánd International Electrotechnical Cómmission (IEC) in ordér to prepare thé scientific basis fór the standardization óf the requirements fór UHV components ánd to prepare thé relevant standards. The first stép was the fóundation of Joint lEC CIGRE Coordination Gróup for UHV (JlCCG). The main tásk for this gróup was an evaIuation of the éxisting standards regarding suitabiIity for UHV ánd to define néw tasks for ClGRE as well ás for IEC. The evaluation depicts that in the field of AC voltage a large number of standards exist which could be used and extended for the UHV range. However, the éxtension from existing 800 kV level to 1000 kV or 1200 kV is not in all cases simple and maybe some further scientific researches will be necessary. Gockenbach UHV technoIogy to make pré-study and addréss to SMB ón the issues reIated on UHV standardizatión which are nót indicated by thé Joint IEC ClGRE group (JICCG), lEC, or other órganizations. With the fórmation óf SMB SG2 the Jóint IEC CIGRE Cóordination Group was disbandéd (IEC SMB4083R). In the field of AC the common opinion was that the existing organization within IEC should take care of the tasks related to the increase of the rated voltages within the UHV range.
